Training Information for ISC #4

SAC Training

As many of you know, for 2009-10, the I-KAN NBPTS State Support Site is offering professional development opportunities designed especially for you; these include Induction for the 21st Century Educator (NBCT ICE21) training, Standards-Aligned Classroom (SAC) training, and Instructional Practices Inventory (IPI) Level I workshop training.

I am pleased to tell you that the Standards-Aligned Classroom (SAC) workshop training has been set up and is now open for registration with me.  First, though, here is a very brief overview of the training:  "SAC training provides educators with the resources needed to meet the rigorous standards set by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and creates meaningful learning targets based on the Illinois Learning Standards.  The three-day training and participation on a SAC team are prerequisite for any NBCT interested in becoming a SAC coach.  Participants will learn methodologies using a curriculum modeled after Richard Stiggen's work. The Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative provides educators the opportunity to reclaim their role as the determiners of key learning targets and appropriate classroom assessments."  More information about SAC is available at this link:  http://www.sacsuccess.org/program/program.html

These are the basic details about this "tuition-free" training:  It will be held on three different Wednesdays, March 18th, April 22nd, and May 6th, from 9 am until 3 pm at West Cook Intermediate Service Center's new offices in Bellwood, a very central location for all of us, and conducted by Cynthia Baranowski of the West 40 staff.  (West 40 is located at 2701 West Washington Boulevard in Bellwood.)  Since participation at this time is limited to 15 NBCTs, admission to the training will be on a "first come, first served" basis; you should also know that, as a result of the recent summit meetings, several NBCTs have already notified me about their interest in this training.   A $90/day reimbursement will be transmitted to your schools for your substitutes; we will also provide a complimentary continental breakfast and lunch as well as all of the training materials.

Please email me ASAP but no later than Wednesday, February 18th, if you would like to participate in this three-day training.  After that date, I will determine which fifteen of you replied first; then notify you.  A more detailed informational email about the training will be sent to the 15 participants some time in early March.

Thank you again for your commitment to NBPTS and to educating the youth of Illinois.  I hope to hear from you soon.  Have a great day, and take care. . .

I am pleased to tell you that the IPI Level 1 workshop training has been set up and is now open for registration with me.  First, though, here is a very brief overview of the training:   Instructional Practices Inventory (IPI) Level I Workshop--Upon successful completion of IPI training, NBCTs will become certified IPI coders who are able to profile and evaluate student engagement within the classroom for the purpose of school improvement. The training takes a minimum of seven hours to complete and provides an understanding of the IPI process, teaches NBCTs to become valid and reliable data collectors, and builds an understanding of how to facilitate faculty discussions using the IPI profile.  IPI provides observational data about the nature of teaching practices across the school.  An observer systematically observes classes throughout the school, obtaining more than 100 observations of teaching practices during a typical school day.  A profile of the practices is provided for the staff. The six categorizations of teaching practices are: active learning/active teaching, teacher-led conversation, teacher-led instruction, student seatwork/teacher engaged, student seatwork/teacher disengaged, and total disengagement.  Further and much more specific information is included in the document that I have attached.

These are the basic details about this "tuition-free" training:  It will be held on Thursday, December 4th, from 9 am until 4 pm at West Cook Intermediate Service Center's new offices in Bellwood (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Bellwood&state=IL&address=2701+Washington+Blvd&zipcode=60104-1936&country=US&latitude=41.881956&longitude=-87.865854&geocode=ADDRESS ), a very central location for all of us, and conducted by Sarah Urycki of the West 40 staff.  (West 40 is moving sometime in mid-November.)  Since participation at this time is limited to 15 NBCTs, admission to the training will be on a "first come, first serve" basis.  Also, a $90/day reimbursement will be transmitted to your schools for your substitutes.

Please email me ASAP but no later than Friday, October 24th, if you would like to participate in this one-day training.  After that date, I will determine which fifteen of you replied first; then notify you.  A more detailed informational email about the training will be sent to the 15 participants some time in November.

Thank you again for your commitment to NBPTS and to educating the youth of Illinois.  I hope to hear from you soon.  Have a great day, and take care. . .
