NBCT Professional Development Opportunities
2008-2009
Three professional development opportunities specifically for National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) are being offered this school year by the I-KAN Regional Office of Education and the Eight Regional Support Sites.
The training opportunities include National Board Certified Teachers Induction for the 21st Century Educator (NBCT ICE21) training, Standards-Aligned Classroom (SAC) training and Instructional Practices Inventory (IPI) Level I workshop training.
Our goal in 2008-2009 is to provide statewide high quality Professional Development for NBCT’s and to increase the Mentoring/Professional Development provided to classroom teachers in targeted schools.

NBCT Induction for the 21st Century Educator (NBCT ICE 21)
ICE 21 provides the essentials needed to become certified NBCT ICE 21 mentors and will be offered from June 22-25, 2009 in St. Charles and again from July 21 -24, 2009 in Bloomington.
The four-day trainings include a general review of the 21st Century Educator mentoring concept, formative assessment, coaching and analyzing student work. Vicki Hensley and Nicki Rosenbaum, Co-chairs of Induction for the 21st Century Educator Initiative, will be conducting the trainings.
Standards-Aligned Classroom (SAC) Initiative
SAC training provides educators with the resources needed to meet the rigorous standards set by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and creates meaningful learning targets based on the Illinois Learning Standards.
The three-day training and participation on a SAC team are prerequisite for any NBCT interested in becoming a SAC coach. Participants will learn methodologies using a curriculum modeled after Richard Stiggen’s work. The Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative provides educators the opportunity to reclaim their role as the determiners of key learning targets and appropriate classroom assessments.
Training is scheduled for early 2009. Exact details will be posted on the I-KAN website www.ilnbpts.org or check with your Regional Support Site for your area.
Instructional Practices Inventory (IPI) Level I Workshop
Upon successful completion of IPI training, NBCTs will become certified IPI coders who are able to profile and evaluate student engagement within the classroom for the purpose of school improvement. Training takes a minimum of seven hours to complete and provides an understanding of the IPI process; teaches NBCTs to become valid and reliable data collectors; and builds an understanding of how to facilitate faculty discussions using the IPI profile.
Training is scheduled for late fall 2008 or early 2009. Exact details will be posted on the I-KAN website www.ilnbpts.org or check with your Regional Support Site for your area.
